NURUN FOUNDATION
The Nurun Foundation’s purpose is supporting struggling individuals and communities in need with access to basic necessities and education. We are US-based, 501(c)3 organization.
We work primarily in Bangladesh and New York City, but anticipate working in other underserved areas of South Asia as our organization grows.
In 2015, team members of the Nurun Foundation learned of struggling children and families in Sarail, Brahmanbaria, Bangladesh and felt compelled to bring life-changing care and education to them. Under the auspices of a citizen’s community board, the Nurun Foundation is providing food, medical care, tuition-free education and textbooks to underprivileged children in Sarail. We also pay teachers’ and staff salaries, while offering pedagogical workshops and scholarships to teachers pursuing higher degrees and certifications. The Nurun Foundation supplies uniforms, warm winter clothing and back-up electricity to ensure that students are comfortable in hot or cold weather. With the establishment of these initial services, we are now planning to build a permanent school on land in Sarail. It will include a science laboratory, library and information technology.
In the United States we are working with Bangladeshi immigrants in the Jackson Heights neighborhood of Queens, New York. This is the base of operations for the Nurun Foundation as 25 percent of New York City’s 76,000 Bangladeshi immigrants live in Jackson Heights. With the connection to our work in Sarail, Nurun Foundation wanted to help Bangladeshi immigrants local in our community. With this, we identified the barriers this immigrant community faces in obtaining employment and pulling themselves out of poverty. Many of these individuals lack English language skills and basic computer knowledge. In 2018, the Nurun Foundation began offering free computer classes with ESL lessons integrated into the courses. We have seen a great benefit with integrating the English language-learning component as an interactive part of our computer classes. Students are improving their language skills while learning how to operate their computer, navigate the internet and use word processing software in a digital world.
Our Process
Nurun Foundation’s principal mandate is to bring life-changing care, supplies and knowledge to vulnerable communities.
Our approach is multi-faceted, collaborative and community-based. We actively work with governments, other nonprofits and local family-strengthening organizations to transform systems and lift people up.
The Nurun Foundation builds confidence in individuals to advocate for themselves, learn new skills and increase opportunities to help pull themselves and their families out of poverty. We transform lives and change the stories of the people we serve.
